Human Oppression Teams and "Sting" Operations

Writer: Meagan Hanna StamellMeagan Hanna Stamell

In recent years, law enforcement agencies have increased their efforts and funding to try to address the use of the internet to commit human trafficking and other crimes against children. Many police agencies engage in “sting” operations that try to lure would-be predators. Law enforcement officers will set up fake “decoy” accounts on social media and dating sites and try to initiate contact with people who might have unlawful motives. The ultimate goal of these operations is to arrest and prosecute individuals who are attempting to engage in sexual activities with minors.

While these operations were likely designed to help protect children from harm, they can also lead to wrongful arrests and false accusations. Some Michigan police departments even have specialized task forces for these operations, like “GHOST” (Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team), “Operation Northern Exposure” (in the Upper Peninsula) and “SHOT” (Shiawassee Human Oppression Team).

Being accused of a child sex crime can have devastating consequences, even if the accusations are false. If you were targeted by one of these specialized operations, you may have a legal defense. Our attorneys have experience fighting these challenging cases and identifying issues of entrapment and other police coercion. Meagan and Jacob know what to look for when challenging the government’s case and will individualize their approach to your case to make sure that your rights are protected.
